Highlights from the Russian Collection: The performing arts – theatre, circus and opera

The Russian Collection includes a fabulous resource of paintings, posters and photographs of the Russian theatre, circus and opera. Images include avant-garde producers such as Meyerhold, cabaret actresses in the Moulin Rouge and the famous Russian choreographer Marius Petipa as a young man in role. The collection holds set and costume designs for Dostoevesky’s The House of the Dead, Berthold Brecht’s The Threepenny Opera and Katerina Izmailova, an opera by Dmitri Shostakovich. Russian Shakespeare productions are represented in the collection through paintings and costume designs for plays such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet.
